A distinctive B2C app? This is what you need to pay attention to!
Brent Dalemans has been a Mendix Developer at Mendify for over a year now. With his business background, he has great insight into the business side of IT and knows all about UI/UX and customer journeys, an important aspect in app development, both in B2B and B2C. He is currently building an entire ecosystem of B2C apps for a large Belgian telecom organization. In this blog, he shares what the benefits of a B2C app are and what to look out for when creating such an app.
Seven things to watch out for
A beautiful, approachable and easily navigable app ensures satisfied users. It boosts brand loyalty and contributes positively to brand identity and loyalty. To develop a really good app, consider the following seven things.
1. Navigation
Consumers linger longer in an app they find easy to control. Simple and logical navigation, consistently implemented on every page, is crucial in this regard.
2. Organization
Organization within an app is also very important. An app that is not well organized can be compared to a house without rooms: totally cluttered and very difficult to figure out where to find which functionality. The organization of an app is like a clear layout of a house. It brings clarity and overview.
3. Uniformity
An app should be one unified whole. Even though so many developers have worked on it and even though it has so many components, there must be a logical connection. House style is a defining component in this. A unified visual identity, with agreements on elements such as logo, colors and typography, ensures recognition.
4. Simplicity
The users of a B2C app are consumers. So it is the ultimate decision makers who use the app, much more often than in B2B. That also means you’re dealing with a very diverse audience. Mr. X’s background and social context may be completely different from that of Ms. Y who uses the app. It should be immediately clear to everyone how to use the app. So that means simplicity is very important.
5. Accessibility
If your app is intended for a broad, diverse audience, that also means you have to take into account people with disabilities. In the Netherlands two million people have a physical or mental disability, in Belgium about half do. This may include people with visual or hearing impairments, but also, for example, people with language delays or mild intellectual disabilities. They too need to be able to participate in society and you need to take that into account when developing your app.
6. Readability
For both people with and without disabilities, readability is a concern. For example, the various components should be properly aligned and the text should be properly aligned. The right use of color and the right size letter also contributes to this.
7. White space
Finally, proper interlining and white space, both around and between text, also determine the usability of an app. Of course we want to put as much information as possible on a page, but make sure it never gets cluttered. With too much or nonsensical information, you scare people away.
