Mendix 10 is coming, what does it mean for you?

At the end of December, Mendix came with joyous news. This June, Mendix 10 will be released! What is known about this new release and what does it mean for existing Mendix customers? In this blog, Cedric Eraly, low-code consultant at Mendify, explains whether you need to take steps and, if so, exactly what those steps are.

Mendix 10 is coming

Besides the “merging” of Mendix Studio and Mendix Studio Pro into one central development environment, not much is known about the new release that will appear in June 2023. What we do know is that the release of Mendix 10 will have implications for users of older Mendix versions. In fact, Mendix only provides far-reaching platform support for the three most recent “major releases. That way, the Mendix organization can guarantee that it can maintain the highest possible security standards and provide the most efficient support.

End-of-support of Mendix 7

So when Mendix 10 is launched in June, the three most recent major releases will be Mendix 10, 9 and 8. If you are using one of those versions, then there is nothing wrong. But Mendix 7, released six years ago, will no longer be supported. Do you have Mendix 7 applications running in your production environment? Then before next June, upgrade these applications to a version that does support Mendix: Mendix 8, 9 or 10. If you don’t, Mendix will not offer bug fixing, updates, research, troubleshooting or other forms of assistance if needed. Does a new security issue arise? Then an updated version of Mendix 7 does not appear. This involves the necessary risks. Moreover, you miss all the benefits of the new features in the latest releases.

How long does it take for a Mendix version to lose support?

Mendix obviously thinks it is very important for you as an IT manager or application administrator to have a clear picture of when you need to migrate your Mendix applications to a higher Mendix version. This is why Mendix has chosen to release a new Mendix major release every 2 years. Specifically, if you build a new application in June in the new Mendix 10 version, you are guaranteed six years of far-reaching Mendix platform support. Do you have Mendix 8 applications running in production? If so, Mendix will still support them until 2025. Mendix 9 applications are assured support by Mendix until 2027.
